Asuka EGL
Asuka Langley Sohryu
Series: Neon Genesis Evangelion
Variation: red elegant gothic lolita (EGL) figurine
Worn at: Halloween party 2008, Sakuracon 2009
Why I made it: The red-variation of Asuka’s black EGL dress figurine pulled at me, and I hadn’t seen anyone make it prior – I actually ordered the figurine online just to use as reference! I initially wanted it done for that year’s Halloween, so I spent a couple of weeks making it, only to find it didn’t turn out right. I remade it for a cosplay gathering the next month, and by the time conventions rolled around, it was up to shape.
Construction: This was my first time trying for a loli-type of costume, and since it’s not my usual avenue, I made some mistakes in its initial construction. The dress had to be completely made and tailored from scratch (I forgot where I placed all my patterns, smart) and the skirts completely ripped out and remade. I used an actual figurine for reference, and since her gloves look shinier than the rest of the dress, I went that path as well and bought red satin gloves and altered them. I spent ungodly amounts of time hand gathering and sewing all the trim, but it was all worth it in the end.
Personal thoughts: I love how the skirt and and gloves came out, hand gathering and sewing your my trim was something I …abhorred to say the least. As as any Asuka costume goes, being able to act like a crazy mofo, no matter how nice the costume, is always a plus. The shoes are still in need of color work, but for the most part, I’m pretty happy with it after the reworking. I love Yunie as my EGL Rei!
