Princess Venus
Princess Venus
Series: Sailor Moon (manga)
Worn at: Nan Desu Kan 2010, Fanime 2011
Why I made it: My friends in Last Chance Myu wanted to put together a Sailor Moon princesses group, and needed a Venus, so I volunteered. I always loved Venus (along with Neptune), so I thought this would be a fun opportunity to make a character I’ve admired for a long time.
Construction: I wanted soft-gold colored fabrics for the dress and hair bow instead of bright yellow satins because I thought the artwork looked much more elegant than a satin dress would reflect, so I chose gold casa crepe for the base and a sheer crepe for the top fabric. The hair bow was made from the same fabric, and matching ribbons made the shoulder straps and choker. I used a McCall’s pattern that allowed you to “design” your own dress by combining different pieces, so I was able to piece together a dress pretty close to that of Venus without having to make my own patterns (which was wonderful due to time constraints). The wig was a very lucky find on Ebay, because it’s quite soft, and matched the color of the dress fabric perfectly! All the necklaces were made by the lovely ladies of Starnigh Industries.
Personal thoughts: The entire dress was made in one day, so I’m quite happy with how it turned out, considering how much I had going on during that time.
